2017 First Festival Highlights

It's about to begin, but here's a cheeky sneak peek of what we have in store at Down Under Berlin 2017!

Hi, so we are letting you in on a secret. We shouldn’t, but we will! We are bursting to tell you about our line up of films for this year but can’t spill all the baked beans just yet, so we’ll give you a sneak peek……..just don’t tell anyone…..ok!?

We are so happy to reveal a few special highlights of the DUB 2017.

Deep Water –The Real Story

Amanda Blue / AUS / 2016 / 87 min / English / German Premiere

Deep Water – The Real Story is a stunning documentary from Amanda Blue that will leave you speechless at learning the events of a murderous epidemic that gripped Sydney in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Up to 80 murders, 30 unsolved cases, thousands of assaults. The attackers are united by contempt. Their targets united by their sexual identity. All are gay.

For the first time, Deep Water: The Real Story presents the full account of the gay hate crime epidemic that bloodied Sydney’s coastline. It stirs up old cases in the hope that new evidence will rise to the surface. So that maybe, after all these years, there will be peace for the dead, and justice for their loved ones

Ben C. Lucas / AUS / 2017 / 96 min / English / German Premiere

We are so happy when a really good Sci-Fi comes out of the Australian shores, and these shores are in beautiful Perth!

Director Ben C. Lucas (Wasted on the Young) has created a fantastic world, so close to our own, yet slightly removed. Based on the best-selling novel “Solitaire” by Kelley Eskridge, OtherLife follows the story of a brilliant software engineer Ren Amari (Jessica de Gouw), who must reclaim control of her revolutionary drug OtherLife to save the minds of millions – and her brother. Exciting stuff!

World Premiere at Sydney Film Festival 2017, and directly to Down Under Berlin 2017!

Joe Cinque’s Consolation

Sotiris Dounoukos / AUS / 2016 / 102 min / English / German Premiere

This haunting story will catch you by surprise, not just because it is a great film, but also because it revolves around a true story that few people are aware of – and a crime that shocked Australia

Sotiris Dounoukos’ Joe Cinque’s Consolation is the adaptation of Helen Garner’s best-selling account of beautiful law student Anu Singh (Maggie Naouri) who began to tell people she planned to kill herself in 1997. With doctors unable to help, Anu’s boyfriend, Joe Cinque (Jerome Meyer), attempts to get to the bottom of her condition. But as Anu’s mental and emotional state disintegrates her plans grow more macabre…

World premiere at Melbourne International Film Festival 2016, and now Down Under Berlin 2017!

Mathew Salleh / AUS / 2016 / 1.41 min / Diverse Languages with English subtitles / German Premiere

This is an intriguing documentary about the way the world cooks meat. Delving into different cultures, it’s not just about grilling, it’s about what brings us together to do it

From Shisanyama in South Africa to Engangsgrill in Sweden, people light the coals, gather, and tell their story. Journeying to 12 countries, Mathew Salleh and Rose Tucker bring Barbecue as glorious cinematic images and a rich orchestral score to the screen. Barbecue is a symphony of meat and fire told in epic detail.

Short film marathon – Aus vs. NZ

Yes, you heard me correctly: We are having a short film battle!

Australian short film, up against New Zealand short film, and YOU, the audience get to decide the winner. In two rounds we will show nearly 3 hours of short films and have a champion by the end of the night. Come and join the fun where down under neighbours clash in the ring. For one night only, it’s going to be EPIC! Keep your ears to the ground for more details on this one.

Hope you are as happy as we are!
