Australia now – Australian culture celebrated in Berlin!

The Australian Government began the Australia now initiative and it is hosted by a different country every year, this year it’s Germany’s turn!

As the Down Under Berlin film festival celebrates everything Australian and Berlin, we thought it only necessary to support another Australian/Germany production, the Australia Now Campaign hosted by the Australian Embassy Berlin!

Highlighting Australian Culture in Germany, this year-long program is highlighting Australian artists in many fields. From February to November 2017 you can see shows and events in music, circus, visual arts, dance, theatre, cinema, photography, sports, science and technology. The campaign aims to deepen the connection between the two countries, celebrating Australia’s diverse culture, the international significance, and the range and complexity of Australian culture.

So, what can you see?

After they hosted Australian films at the 67th Berlinale Film Festival in February this year, we’ve highlighted some of the other Australia Now events coming up throughout the year-

25 Feb – 20 AUG

The wonderful circus variety show, Scotch & Soda at the iconic and legendary Chamäleon Theatre, will take your breath away. Australian acrobats and musicians present an evening of circus, theatre and jazz. It’s no secret that Berlin loves a good variety show, and this one fits the bill completely.

This contemporary image of Australian art featuring paintings, sculptures, mixed media, photography and paper works, is showing at the Arndt Art Agency. Eight prominent Australian visual artists include their works on the themes of instinct, urges and corporeal. This is a great chance to see some fantastic Australian visual pieces in Berlin.

23 July

In this performance series, Australian Berlin Electronic Connections showcase a contemporary image of Australian music with Australian electronic musicians, sound artists and DJ’s. This event is producing a vinyl record of the performances, limited edition of course.

26-28 October

These will no doubt be incredible dance performances by the renowned indigenous dance company Bangarra Dance Theatre. Bangarra bring shows Nyapanyapa, Miyagan and Macq to Berlin and is an event not to be missed! Especially if you loved the Bangarra dance film Spear, by Stephen Page, which was screened at Down Under Berlin last year. Stephen Page also choreographed Nyapanyapa in this dance triple bill.

1 Nov – 31 March 2018

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art is one of the oldest and most complex and is recognised all around the world. Showing pieces ranging from 1800’s to today, these individual pieces represent Australia’s greatest indigenous artists, on loan from the National Gallery of Australia’s collection.

But it doesn’t stop here; there are performances and showings in Cologne, Frankfurt Am Main, Bremen, Nuremberg and Hamburg.

The Australia now program website will be updated with ticket links closer to the dates of the events so keep an eye on it!

Why not head out and support some Australian culture in Berlin. And then later in the year – we’ll see you at the movies!
