A widowed German-Australian mother finds answers to generational secrets as her gay daughter begins to face an unexpected pregnancy.
Libby is a 20 something year old, modern day Australian girl grappling with guilt, regret and uncertainty when a mysterious pregnancy arises that is at odds with her known sexuality. In Libby’s darkest hours, her German expat mother sits her down to a traditional East Frisian tea ceremony for a carefully trodden conversation about their sudden predicament. Together, they must find a common language and confront hard truths that they both have buried over time.
Part of the short film program “Aussie Shorts – Take 2“ on Saturday, 28 September 2019, at 8:00pm.
“In 2016, I became fascinated with Ostfriesentee [East Frisian tea], when a German woman, whom I was interviewing at the time, shared an impromptu traditional tea ceremony with me in her family home in Germany. It was here that the seed to this film was planted; when I encountered the tea ceremony, a time to relax, chat and unwind. My observation of the ceremony and tea itself, is that it is rich in imagery and symbolic meaning, reflecting the multi-dimensional nature of human relationships and varying depths of conversation – the said, the meant, the clouded and withheld.” – Director Matthew R.
